All single-phase motors work basically the same. It is the way the are started that differs. In order for a single-phase induction motor to work the rotor has to be subjected to a rotating magnetic field. This is produced in the stator coils of the split-phase motor by having start windings positioned with their axes 90° electrical in relation to the run windings.

CAPACITOR START CAPACITOR RUN MOTOR
The most complicated and expensive single-phase motor is the Capacitor-Start/Capacitor-Run Motor. These motors contain both a starting and running capacitor. Smaller sizes will generally have two capacitor enclosures on the top of the motor, while larger sizes may have both capacitors in a large housing on the side of the motor. Capacitor-start/capacitor-run motors are used over a wide range of single-phase applications primarily for starting hard loads. They are available in sizes ranging from ½ to 25 horsepower; however, common sizes are between 3-and-10 horsepower. Maximum sizes allowed are generally dictated by the electrical power supplier. The speed of this motor varies about 10% from no load to fully loaded conditions. Some capacitor-start/capacitor-run motors are available as multi-speed motors with two-or-three fixed operating speeds when appropriate control equipment is used.

CAPACITOR START MOTOR
Capacitor Start Motors are similar in construction to split-phase motors. The major difference is the use of a capacitor connected in series to the start windings to maximize starting-torque. The capacitor is mounted either at the top or side of the motor. They are commonly referred to simply as "Capacitor-Start Motors." Capacitor-start motors are available for applications ranging in size from 1/6-to-10 horsepower. They are generally limited to sizes of 3 horsepower (or less) due to high starting current concerns. The speed of this motor varies about 10% from no load to fully loaded conditions. Some capacitor-start motors are available as multi-speed motors with two-or-three fixed operating speeds when appropriate control equipment is used.

CAPACITOR RUN MOTOR
Capacitor Run Motors are technically referred to as "Permanent-Split Capacitor (PSC) Motors" in most manufacturers' literature. Generally available sizes of capacitor run (PSC) motors range from fractional sizes up to 5-horsepower with most being less than 3-horsepower. They come in a wide variety of synchronous speeds. The speed of this motor varies about 10% from no-load to fully loaded conditions. Capacitor-run motors are available as multi-speed motors with two, three, or even four fixed operating speeds when appropriate control equipment is used.
